How to sell your car privately in Australia

A private sale usually gets you the most money for your car. Here is how to do it quickly and safely.

1. Know your price

Look at what cars like yours are selling for, not just what similar ads are asking. Price a little above the figure you want so there is room to move, but not so high that buyers scroll past. Overpriced cars sit, and stale ads get lower offers.

2. Get the car ready

  • Clean it inside and out. It is the cheapest way to add value.
  • Fix small, cheap things: globes, wiper blades, a chipped mirror.
  • Gather the service book, receipts, both keys and the owner's manual.
  • Check the registration is current. A car with rego is easier to sell.

3. Write a good ad

  • Good photos in daylight: front, back, both sides, interior, dash with the kilometres, boot and tyres.
  • Be specific: the exact version, kilometres, service history, recent work and why you are selling.
  • Be honest about faults. It saves time and builds trust.

4. Show it safely

  • Ask callers for their name and number before they visit.
  • Show the car at your home in daylight, or have someone with you.
  • Go on the test drive with them, and check their licence first.

5. Get paid safely

  1. Accept a bank transfer and wait until the money has cleared in your account before you hand over the keys.
  2. Be wary of overpayments, refunds or anyone who wants to pay through an unusual service.
  3. Write a receipt with the VIN, price, date and both names, and keep a copy.
  4. Lodge the notice of disposal with your state's road authority straight away, so tolls and fines stop coming to you.
